Philippines is composed of seventy-nine provinces and 7,107 islands. The Major Islands are Luzon in the North and Mindanao in the south, and in between lies the Visayan Island group, while the Palawan is the largest island to the west. Metro Manila is the capital and largest city. The Philippine Population is estimated at 80 million. In the Philippines there are several volcanoes one of which is Mt. Mayon, which is located in the Province of Albay, located at 13.3N, 123.7E  with an elevation of 8,075 feet (2,460 m).  Mayon has the classic conical shape of a typical stratovolcano, ad is the most active volcano in the Philippines. Since 1616, Mayon has erupted 47 times. The most recent eruption, in 1993, began unexpectedly with an explosion. The initial eruption lasted only 30 minutes but it generated pyroclastic flows that killed 68 people and prompted the evacuation of 60,000 others.  Another volcano, Mt. Pinatubo is an active volcano located on the island of Luzon in the Philippines, at the intersection of the borders of the provinces of Zambales, Tarlac, and Pampanga. The volcano's recent eruption was in June 1991 which came after 500 years of dormancy, and produced one of the largest and most violent eruptions of the 20th century. Mt Pinatubo location at 15.13N, 120.35E  with a elevation of 5248 ft (1600 m). Mt. Apo, the highest peak of all Volcanoes in the Philippines, is measured at 3,144 meters (10,311 feet) and is located in Mindanao. Main Philippine mountain ranges are the Cordilleras and Sierra Madre in Northern Luzon. This country has Twenty-two active volcanoes, and Sixteen defined regions. The island of Cebu is the best choice for vacations as it is relatively free of earth quakes, (I've been here two years and have not felt one yet) and because it is surrounded by several other large islands isolating it from tsunamis. Even after heavy rains I rarely see flooding here as opposed to the Manila area which is prone to flooding.
